A young soldier sits back against the wall of a ruined street with a field dressing pressed to the exit wound in his thigh; blood has run down his leg and pooled in the dirt, and the medic’s gloves are slick with it. His rifle lies in the water beside him, muzzle half submerged, the sling still across his shoulder. He lifts his head and looks up at the camera, breathing hard, sweat cutting lines through the dust on his face. Hard overcast light, smoke drifting across the street, a burning vehicle soft behind him. Automatic fire in the distance, no music.
