Why it works
A whip pan is a fast, forgiving move: motion blur does the work and the audience reads the flock rather than individual birds, which is where models fail. The single band of sun at the edge of the shaded plaza is what makes the burst visible, and it is a lighting decision a still photographer would make too. The 4:3 frame is deliberate, giving the flock vertical room without going fully vertical.
